Written by Safia on | No Comments

SAN FRANCISCO, May 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ – Kontagent, the leading global user analytics company for social and mobile apps, now offers full support to studios that are developing mobile games on the Unity game engine. With the expansion of Kontagent’s mobile SDKs to support Unity, Kontagent simplifies the implementation process for Unity developers who want access to Kontagent’s analytics solution.

Unity Technologies is the creator of Unity, an intuitive and flexible development platform used to make wildly creative and intelligently interactive 3D and 2D content. The “author once, deploy everywhere” capability ensures developers can publish to all of the most popular platforms. Unity Technologies boasts a thriving community of 800,000 registered developers including large publishers, indie studios, students and hobbyists.

“We know developers are looking for ways to build highly engaging mobile games and we are always trying to find ways to help our customers be more productive,” said Fredric Newberg, CTO at Kontagent. “Unity has enabled developers worldwide to create amazing 3D video games. Now that Kontagent supports Unity, developers can also easily get the metrics they need to constantly improve those games and keep their players coming back for more.”

This new capability allows mobile game developers to simply use a Kontagent plug-in for the Unity SDK. With minimal effort, developers can quickly integrate Kontagent’s API and get access to the analytics that Kontagent provides, including metrics such as average session lengths and user lifetimes.

“Game design analytics can be a powerful tool to fine tune games,” said David Helgason, CEO of Unity Technologies. “We’re pleased that a leading analytics solution such as Kontagent’s kSuite now supports Unity.”

Newberg adds, “We added Unity support so that developers can better manage their time and resources, focusing on doing what they do best: building best-in-class games for the expanding mobile audience.”

The detailed insights into user behavior provided by the kSuite platform enable developers to tune their game or other app design to hold users’ attention and maximize their in-app purchases, such as in-game virtual goods, in today’s increasingly competitive landscape.

Kontagent CEO to Speak at GiGse on Strategies for Monetizing Social Casino Players on Facebook

Written by Safia on | No Comments

Social Casino Gaming Category Now Represents 13% of Entire Social Gaming Market with Success of Playtika, Double Down, Blitzoo and Others

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (April 24, 2012) –– Kontagent, the leading user analytics company for social and mobile app developers, today announced that CEO, Jeff Tseng, will be speaking at GiGse, the 11th Global iGaming Summit & Expo, on April 26th. His session will provide the audience of mainly land-based and online casino operators with insights into how to succeed on Facebook, and more specifically, on monetization strategies that are unique to the social platform. Social casinos are a highly attractive genre right now due to its fast growth and higher-than-average revenue per user, which is estimated as at least 40% higher than a typical social game.

As land-based and online casino operators rush to gain a foothold in this burgeoning market, industry leaders from both sides are turning to Kontagent for the data science and know-how needed to succeed in this game genre. In the last six months alone, the category of social casino gaming has exploded to represent a significant percentage of Kontagent’s total business, with a client roster that includes Blitzoo (Slotspot), Buzz All Stars, Playtika, Mytopia (Bingo Island and Governor of Poker), Pacific Interactive (House of Fun), Peak Games (101 Okey, Okey and Okey Plus), Plumbee, PopCap and Viaden.

Over the last four years, Kontagent has helped thousands of social and mobile app developers leverage user analytics to improve their marketing and acquisition, game design, engagement and monetization. Social casino game developers are now partnering with Kontagent to benefit from the company’s vast domain knowledge in this segment, utilizing metrics and data science to build highly addictive–and highly profitable–casino games on social and mobile platforms.

“Social casino gaming is a hot space right now and everyone is looking to get in on the action,” said Kontagent CEO and Co-founder, Jeff Tseng. “Land-based and online casino operators know how to build addictive casino games, but that expertise does not completely translate into how to build a successful casino game on Facebook and other social platforms. And, social game developers who have built games in other genres don’t necessarily understand the best practices for casino games, which have different mechanics and benchmarks for monetization than other game categories. We help both sides understand which metrics to watch – and how to act on those metrics – so they can build highly engaging games that really take advantage of the hyper-growth opportunities that exist today in this category.”

“We manage very live communities around our social games and Kontagent allows us to quickly identify trends and produce insights that we can translate into actions in real time,” said Eran Gonen, CEO of Mytopia, Inc., developers of the hit social casino games Bingo Island and Governor of Poker. “In addition, the people at Kontagent continuously assist us to find creative ways to measure less traditional behaviors we’re interested in, which in turn translates into bottom line results. The insights gained helped scale and enhance our social games’ key metrics and our internal game developing intuition.”

Kontagent’s unique approach to user analytics helps companies discover behavioral insights and social usage patterns around their applications. Data is provided in an easy to access dashboard that enables employees at all levels of an organization to gain the critical insights they need to make real-time data-driven decisions. In the increasingly competitive world of online casino games, real-time access to such actionable data is critical.

Kontagent Brings Hive Data Mining to the Cloud for Social/Mobile App Developers

Written by Safia on | No Comments

First 100% Hosted Use of Hadoop Open Source Data Warehouse System

SAN FRANCISCO, April 10, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Analytics software provider Kontagent today became the first company to deploy the Hive open source data warehouse system in the cloud, leveraging the Hadoop project’s big data analysis capabilities to help social and mobile application developers explore user behavior. Hive is powering kSuite DataMine™, a just-released data mining tool for Kontagent’s kSuite social/mobile app analytics platform.

The new DataMine solution is 100% hosted with all data loading and other setup requirements handled by Kontagent, enabling big data exploration unavailable in any other SaaS analytics solution. Both the cloud deployment and the end-to-end solution are milestones in the use of Hive, dramatically reducing the costs of data mining by eliminating the need to build or license proprietary software, buy the servers, load the data, and maintain the database.

“Our core product is an online dashboard that answers hundreds of common questions about user behavior in social games and mobile apps, but we wanted to empower data analysts to dive deeper by creating ad hoc queries. The challenge is that the kSuite platform captures as many as 50 billion events for our customers each month. We needed to provide a more flexible big data exploration solution for analysts and business intelligence professionals to dive into the raw data,” said Jeff Tseng, Kontagent Co-Founder and CEO. “Hive gave us the means to address that challenge, and we took it to the next level with an affordable out-of-the-box cloud strategy.”

With a basic knowledge of SQL, business intelligence professionals at social/mobile app development businesses can use the company’s new Hive-based tool to gain in-depth insights into how users interact with their apps. Questions might range from “What last three actions did users take before they uninstalled the app or failed to return?” to “What last five behaviors did users exhibit before purchasing virtual goods?”

The answers – unavailable without data mining – can be used to fine-tune application design, identify high-value cohorts, shape marketing plans and guide other decisions to generate maximum value from each app.

Kontagent’s New ‘kSuite DataMine’ Changes Social/Mobile Analytics Game for App Developers

Written by Safia on | 1 Comment

Turnkey, Hosted Data Mining Tool Empowers Analysts to Deep Dive into Acquisition, Engagement and Monetization Data

SAN FRANCISCO (April 4, 2012) – Kontagent today enhanced its flagship kSuite social/mobile analytics platform with an industry-first, hosted, out-of-the-box data mining option equipping data analysts with unlimited query powers to help social gaming and mobile app developers better engage and monetize users. The new option – kSuite DataMine™ – adds an entirely new level of flexibility and power to the kSuite analytics platform by providing analysts with full access to their user data for exploration without additional in-house infrastructure or engineering investments.

Available as an add-on monthly subscription to kSuite with all setup handled by Kontagent, the new kSuite DataMine feature enables big data exploration not found in any other app analytics solution delivered over the cloud. The previous version of the kSuite platform provided C-levels, marketers, producers and developers with access to critical metrics they needed to make data-driven decisions. Now, with kSuite DataMine, Kontagent provides analysts and business intelligence professionals at these organizations with access to the data they need as well. Together, the platform now provides an “end-to-end” solution that empowers Kontagent customers with data and insights that are easily accessible by the entire organization.

Equipped with kSuite DataMine and basic knowledge of SQL, analysts now have free rein to ask questions, test hypotheses, and slice and dice data in any way they wish to uncover information that can be used to help prevent churn, drive in-app engagement, maximize virtual goods sales, analyze user cohorts over time, and more. kSuite DataMine makes it possible to answer questions such as:

  • What last three actions did users take before they uninstalled or failed to return?
  • What last five behaviors did users exhibit before purchasing virtual goods?
  • What are the purchase habits of my highest-value gamers or users?
  • Who are my most viral users, and how can I use that information to attract more of them?
  • What unusual spending patterns or other behaviors signal the presence of fraud or other anomalies?

“We’ve been able to use kSuite DataMine to analyze the KPI impact of even the smallest features and tests,” said Miles Lennon, VP Product Management at GameGround, a Beta customer of kSuite DataMine. “kSuite DataMine enables us to tune our game mechanics and balance our economy with increased precision.”

“Until now, data mining in our market has been largely unaffordable. You had to build or license expensive proprietary software, buy the servers, load the data, and hire engineers to maintain the database. With the kSuite DataMine solution, we are literally changing the game as well as dramatically reducing costs by providing a turnkey, 100% hosted solution with no customer overhead whatsoever,” said Jeff Tseng, Kontagent Co-Founder and CEO.

Tseng adds, “Our kSuite dashboard still answers hundreds of common questions that can drive better design, marketing and business decisions, but now you can also ask your own questions quickly, easily and cost-effectively. Under the hood, we use the same technology that Facebook uses to mine their own vast database. No other social/mobile analytics platform offers this power or competitive advantage.”

The newest release of kSuite also adds the kSuite Processed Data API, which enables key metrics generated by the Kontagent platform to be integrated into custom tables, spreadsheets or other applications for more flexible, granular analysis. With the ability to automatically refresh the processed data and metrics, analysts can gain insights more quickly without having to manually pull and export their data sets into third-party tools. kSuite DataMine, the new API and other upcoming “beyond-the-dashboard” upgrades are all designed to provide new capabilities to analysts and business intelligence professionals.

Mobile App Industry Leaders Partner to Launch First-Ever Open API Standard for User Acquisition Marketing Campaigns

Written by Safia on | No Comments

Industry Standard API Built by Kontagent in Partnership with Chartboost, PlayHaven, MdotM, and other leading companies to Provide App Marketers and Developers With Transparency Needed to Measure and Optimize the ROI of Ad Campaigns

SAN FRANCISCO (March 29, 2012)—Leading user analytics innovator Kontagent today announced the launch of the Mobile Acquisition Transparency Alliance (MATA), creator of the mobile industry’s first-ever open API designed to bring transparency and efficiency to data collection, processing and reporting for mobile user acquisition campaigns. The Alliance is comprised of a wide group of industry leaders, including many top developers, monetization platform PlayHaven, demand side platform MdotM, direct deals marketplace provider Chartboost, and leading ad networks.

Mobile developers and ad providers are rallying around the MATA open API because of the painful processes they currently endure to consolidate the campaign performance metrics they need to make better business decisions. MATA streamlines the extremely fragmented and sometimes painful data collection and analysis processes now in place by defining and implementing a platform-agnostic, industry-wide Open API standard for the formatting, processing and timely reporting of mobile app user acquisition metrics.

With recent news that Apple is prohibiting UDIDs, the need for such a standard reporting mechanism is even more critical to the ongoing innovation, growth and accountability of the entire ecosystem. The MATA Open API is agnostic to any mobile device unique identifier used by developers and ad providers and is designed to support any install detection standards the industry ultimately settles on. MATA members are also involved in the on-going efforts to find a viable solution that resolves the ongoing privacy concerns associated with UDIDs.

“Traffic attribution and measuring the ROI of users by origin is one of the biggest pain points for anyone with a mobile app component to their business,” said Andy Yang, CEO of PlayHaven, a leading mobile monetization platform. “We believe in absolute transparency and are very excited to take the industry a step forward with MATA.”

“Not having easy and predictable access to important acquisition metrics across all of our mobile marketing channels is a serious problem for us, and I imagine any mobile app developer,” said Mike Sego, CEO of Gaia Online, a large mobile app developer. “This Alliance will enable us to operate our business with greater clarity and vision into ROI, and to be much more intelligent about where we decide to invest our money in acquiring new customers.”

“Unifying the APIs that everyone uses right now to report conversion is great for mobile developers, and by joining this initiative Chartboost is enabling them to use the same technology for Direct Deals,” said Maria Alegre, CEO of Chartboost, the Direct Deals marketplace that enables game developers to buy and sell advertising directly from each other.

“We believe that MATA is a step in the right direction for the industry and will make it easier for our clients to continue running scalable and profitable, performance-based campaigns.  MdotM’s API offering together with MATA represents a strong value proposition to our clients.” said Sourabh Niyogi, CEO of MdotM, a leading mobile Demand Side Platform.  ”MdotM is excited to be a part of this initiative.”

Built with mutual collaboration amongst developers, marketers, networks, agencies, direct deals marketplace, and others the open MATA standard also ensures the needs of all key stakeholders are met.

“The ingestion of user acquisition data is an enormous pain point for the industry and it’s growing even more problematic by the day as the mobile industry explodes,,” said Josh Williams, President and Chief Science Officer at Kontagent. “MATA solves this problem and provides high-quality, reliable data to the studios, while offloading the data feed responsibility from the ad networks, exchanges and other providers onto a robust, scalable Open API designed and maintained by MATA Key Advisory Members.”

“The industry has been clamoring for a solution like this for years, and we and MATA partners are now solving this growing problem before it gets worse,” Williams said. “Analytics is what we do. We don’t sell apps and we don’t sell ads, so our motivation is purely to serve as a catalyst to help everyone in the industry eliminate headaches, stop wasting time and start growing business.”

For more information about MATA and how to become part of the alliance for better data standards, visit http://www.openmata.org.

Kontagent Logs 500% Growth in 2011 for Social/Mobile App Analytics

Written by Safia on | No Comments

Vital Competitive Platform for Driving User Retention & Maximum Monetization

SAN FRANCISCO (March 5, 2012) – Kontagent, the leading global user analytics company for social and mobile application developers, today announced record 500% year-over-year revenue growth in FY 2011 as more customers leveraged the company’s kSuite analytics solution to increase user acquisition, retention and monetization rates. The detailed insights into user behavior provided by the kSuite platform enable marketers to gain more visibility into campaigns and better target high-value users. Meanwhile, developers and producers use the data to improve customer experience and increase user engagement. These insights have proven crucial in today’s increasingly competitive landscape.

The fivefold increase in Kontagent revenues was fueled by factors including:

  • 100 new enterprise customers with a combined 150 million monthly active users, including the company’s first mobile-only clients.
  • Expanding user bases and associated incremental revenues from existing customers driven by use of Kontagent analytics to help keep players engaged.
  • Lucrative platform partnerships with global Latino social network Quepasa and South Korean web portal Daum, giving all developers on both platforms full access to Kontagent analytics. The sites have 35 million and 38 million members, respectively.
  • On-staff data scientists who help customers interpet kSuite data making it possible to take full advantage of Kontagent analytics on user acquisition, engagement, retention, revenue, virtual economy performance and more.

“User data is a powerful competitive weapon for social and mobile marketers and developers. We provide critical insights like which channels produce the most profitable segments of users, when and where they abandon an app, what in-app purchases they make, and their user behavior on different time slices such as sessions, time since install, time on site, and level in the case of game developers,” said Jeff Tseng, Kontagent co-founder and CEO. “Our growth is directly related to our ability to provide this information to companies that are fighting for both market and wallet share in an environment where users have a virtually unlimited choice of where to spend their time.”

Kontagent has an established customer base that includes leading social game studios Peak Games, Gaia Online, Popcap, Kixeye, Tetris Battle, Gazeus Games, Sismo Games, Social Quantum, Web Games, Playrix, Atommica and Atakama Labs. And, the company has additional top-tier clients in Ecommerce and other large vertical segments. Customers credit Kontagent with providing them the data and insights they need to optimize their businesses by helping them focus on improving all the levers that affect revenue and profitability.

  • “Kontagent has been invaluable in helping us design a more engaging and fun experience for our players,” said Fred Delse, Tetris Online, Inc.’s Vice President of Product Management. “Their platform has enabled us to ask the strategic questions unique to our needs in understanding how our players interact and behave in-game, and make more profitable decisions. More importantly, we get those questions answered in real-time to act on the data across departments.”
  • “As a fast-moving company, Kontagent has been a key partner providing us with critical best practices and insights into our customer economics,” said Sidar Sahin, CEO of Peak Games. “We’ve been able to successfully grow and aggressively expand in the EMEA market without missing a beat. A lot of the confidence in our expansion strategy comes from our ability to access Kontagent’s data science and real-time metrics on user acquisition, retention and revenue.”

With its established footprint in the social gaming market, Kontagent is now building on that expertise to expand into the mobile arena. The company’s mobile analytics services are designed to help mobile developers gain competitive advantage; know which platforms and devices are delivering the best performance; measure and optimize their marketing performance in terms of user acquisition; and much more.

Kontagent Execs and Data Scientists to Lead Roundtable Discussions at Inside Social Apps 2012 on Key Issues Facing Social, Mobile App Developers

Written by Safia on | No Comments

SAN FRANCISCO (February 8, 2012)Kontagent, the leading global user analytics company, today announced that several members of its staff will lead five roundtable discussions at the Inside Social Apps 2012 conference in San Francisco. Held Feb. 8-9 at The Concourse at the San Francisco Design Center, the event brings together leaders of top social and mobile social gaming companies to analyze the toughest challenges facing the industry.

Inside Social Apps is especially geared toward developers that create apps for Facebook, iPhone, Android and emerging online social platforms. Jeff Tseng, Co-Founder and CEO of Kontagent, and other members of the team will take an investigative approach moderating discussions, addressing–among others–issues that social developers face when entering the mobile app space, how to decide whether to build or buy an analytics solution, and strategies for engaging and retaining players of social games.

Kontagent’s data scientists and other team members moderating these sessions are steeped with practical experience and deep knowledge of social and mobile gaming trends. They will share their insights—gleaned as key members of  Kontagent, one of the first companies to build analytics around user behavior—and encourage attendees to learn by sharing their own experiences in the space. Their diverse backgrounds bring unique perspectives to often difficult problems.

In addition to those listed, Kontagent will also lead sessions addressing the relative importance for developers of the key performance indicators of average revenue per paying user (ARPPU) as compared to average revenue per user (ARPU), and the increased competition social game marketers face on Facebook in the aftermath of FarmVille developer Zynga’s recent initial public offering (IPO).

“More than with other apps, the secret to success in the social and mobile gaming market is the analysis of and proactive response to real-time information,” Tseng said. “Competition is so fast and furious in this industry that small and large studios alike cannot afford to live in a bubble. Sharing anecdotes and war stories at these roundtables fosters success for all participants. These discussions will focus on high-level testing strategies and best practices, giving attendees key takeaways we’ve experienced first-hand.”

A growing number of social game studios leverage Kontagent as their analytics provider of choice. Among others, these include Peak Games, Gaia Online, Popcap, Kixeye, Tetris Battle, Gazeus Games, Sismo Games, Social Quantum, Web Games, Playrix, Atommica and Atakama Labs. Kontagent’s kSuite analytics solution solves the persistent problem social and mobile companies face today in processing and filtering through massive data sets to find the most actionable metrics and insights. Kontagent customers access kSuite’s intuitive analytics dashboard and its deep domain expertise to gain insights into customer data.

Top Uses for Custom Events and Funnels

Written by Safia on | No Comments

Here’s your second installment of our popular “Did You Know” series.  Our aim is to provide you with all the tools you need to measure and optimize your customer economics – from acquisition, to retention to monetization. Hopefully, this series helps you to accomplish your goals.

Of course, your dedicated account manager and our team of data scientists are available anytime to help you to translate your data into actionable insights.

Custom Event Tracking and Funnel Creation
Gain visibility into in-app events that will provide insights into your users’ behavior. Cohort analysis, or analyzing groups of users that share common similar characteristics or behaviors, is often the cornerstone strategy of many successful data-driven companies.

DID YOU KNOW?
You can use custom events to:

  • Create specific in-app events that measure actions unique to your application.
  • Analyze custom actions on a timeline, aggregate or custom chart.
  • Look at grouped bundles of similar events in a specified category.
  • A/B test different behaviors of cohorts.

Check out some best practices below, and contact your account manager to find out more about how instrumenting and measuring custom events can help your teams use data to drive higher ROI:

Marketers:

  • Gauge user quality by measuring post-install engagement events by demographic.
  • Measure how long it takes for an important first-engagement or first-monetization events to be triggered in the application by demographic.
  • Use funnels to tie in-app engagement and monetization events back to original marketing channels.
  • A/B Test →
    • Engagement rates by marketing channel.
    • Purchase and monetization rates by marketing channel.

Developers / Producers:

  • Measure how many people who complete a certain engagement event go on to make a purchase.
  • Gain visibility into what actions your users undertake earlier in your application versus later.
  • Monitor in-app errors that could affect the overall performance of your application.
  • A/B Test →
    • The most popular item categories and individual items in your virtual store.
    • The most popular items purchased or used versus the highest grossing items to maximize revenue by game level, or over time.

All:

  • Monitor key aggregated trends around in-app engagement or purchase events critical to the loyalty and monetization of your user base.
  • Monitor the overall balance of your virtual economy.
